In the modern world, it’s not enough to simply generate profits. We have a responsibility to respect internationally recognized human rights, including workers’ rights and the right to enjoy a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment; and prioritize public health and safety.
We are unwavering in our commitment to upholding these expectations in all our activities and business relationships. We believe in an open and fair market, strive to be a fair competitor, and work diligently to establish policies and processes to identify, prevent and mitigate unfavourable impacts on human rights.
Fairness and competitiveness form the foundation of our compensation design and practices. We apply a gender-neutral point-based methodology to determine our job leveling to ensure equity and freedom from systemic biases.
Labour and freedom of association laws and agreements were created to protect the best interests of employees, and we believe in their freedom to choose whether they want union representation.
Employees are required to comply with our Code of Conduct Policy, which outlines Canfor’s high ethical standards and values, and abide by our Bullying and Harassment Policy that protects our people from such behaviour by anyone in the workplace.
Our front-line teams are essential to our ability to run our operations and provide quality products to our customers. So, in 2022, we initiated a review to better understand the front-line employee experience. This resulted in immediate adjustments to our wage scales where warranted, an appreciation bonus and a gift pack for every front-line employee, and a new resource at every location to focus on safety and training.
